Tutoring Program
The Tutoring Program offers concentrated subject tutoring for classes in a variety of subjects. A tutor is assigned to one class section and works with the instructor and students during class as well as during tutoring sessions in the Cartwright Learning Resources Center and the Gateway Center. The Gateway Program centers around these subject areas:
- English as a Second Language;
- English Skills;
- English;
- Biological Sciences;
- Physical Sciences;
- Vocational Programs;
- Modern Languages;
- Personal Development 100 (College Success).
In Spring 2008, over 300 course sections from across the curriculum were designated Gateway, up from 60 sections for Spring 2006. A dedicated Gateway Center on campus, established in February 2007, logged over 5,000 student visits during the Spring 2008 semester.
An internal evaluation for the 2007/08 academic year found that around 3% more students in Gateway sections successfully complete the course than in comparable non-Gateway classes. For students placing below college level in writing and reading, course completion rate is nearly 7% higher in Gateway classes.
